1. How would you describe your personal fashion?
I would describe my personal fashion style as chic and comfortable with a lot of black. I am originally from NY and have lived in Portland for 14 years so it is a blend of these two geographic areas- two of the best fashion cities in the world I think!
2. What is your go-to piece of clothing and why?
My "go-to" pieces rotate every few weeks. I have a gray corduroy jeggings that I love to coordinate with a colorful top, turquoise earrings and a blazer or sweater. Today at work I am wearing The Furies Pipes Pants from Shop Adorn, a little black sweater, Prada heels from a resale store here in Portland (Seams to Fit) and earrings from a local designer (grayling).
3. Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I usually get my fashion inspiration from the streets of Portland. I will see something I like and then I try to re-create it. I am also inspired by the seasons and I feel like that my style changes a lot as the weather changes. Other than that, Nicole at Shop Adorn really helps me. I will go into the dressing room and she will hand me things to try on. She seems to know what would look good on me better than I know myself.
4. What is your favorite service offered at Blossom?
Blossom Clinic is a natural health clinic and we offer acupuncture, Aisan bodywork, nutrition and massage. Right now, I am psyched about our Personalized Nutrition Plans for 2012. We are offering 40% discounts on related appointments if you schedule in December for January!
5. What sets Blossom Clinic apart from other clinics?
What sets our clinic apart from other clinics is that we are a modern women's health clinic. We know what women want when it comes to natural medicine and we offer the best services around that. Our practitioners have between 9-23 years experience treating women. We really do have a great team here.
Q&A with Kate Sprouse of Sugar Me
Featuring another vendor from our recent Holiday Giveaway, this Q&A is with the wonderful Kate Sprouse, owner of Sugar Me. Her salon features a natural waxing process that is gaining popularity for its less painful procedure and longer lasting benefits.
Kate is a Portland native who started her career in 2004 when she attended a naturopathic school for esthetics where she eventually ended up teaching. It was during this time she experienced what would very quickly become her passion in life: Sugaring!
This technique is an all-natural, non-toxic way to wax using a mixture of sugar, lemon and water. It's what Kate describes “as all the benefits of waxing with none of the drawbacks.”
Sugar Me offers sugaring services for all of the body areas that need de-fuzzing. Check out the adorable store, which is located just a few blocks down from Shop Adorn on NE Fremont Street!
1. How would you describe your personal fashion?
Hmmm... My personal fashion? I think the best way to describe my fashion is layered! I am a Portland native and have spent my whole life putting my outfits together taking into account our ever changing weather and my sheer stubbornness to never carry an umbrella! So you will usually find me in either leggings or denim and a mix of shirts or dresses with sweaters and scarves. Yep... this girl’s personal fashion is definitely layered!
2. What is your go-to piece of clothing and why?
My go-to clothing piece is my beloved pair of Frye boots. They go with pretty much all my outfits (dressy or casual), are insanely comfortable, weather-friendly, and the more they get "worn" the more I love them.
3. Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I tend to get my fashion inspiration from the streets of Portland, as well as my clients! Portlanders are pretty darn fashionable and I can count on everyday coming in contact with my darling clients and admiring the way they look!
4. What is your favorite service offered at Sugar Me?
This one is a tough one! My favorite service would probably be sugaring brows! I think that there is a definite artwork to it, plus it has the biggest wow factor when done!
5. What is the best thing Sugar Me has to offer?
I think that the best thing that Sugar Me has to offer is a warm, friendly and welcoming environment for people to come in and get there hair removed in an all natural way! Lets be honest, there are certain areas that make people a little nervous about coming in and getting hair removed from. And our all time favorite thing is that moment when you're in the treatment room and there is a breath of decompression from our clients because they know they are in a safe environment and are going to be treated with professionalism and care!
6. What sets Sugar Me apart from other spas?
I feel that the main thing that sets Sugar Me apart from other spas is that we specialize in the sugaring technique of hair removal. It is the only thing we do here...so we feel confident in being the best sugaristas we can be!
Q&A with Personal Stylist Scarlet Chamberlin
Today we're spotlighting stylist, Scarlet Chamberlin, who is one of our participating vendors in the 2011 Holiday Giveaway. She will be hosting an in-shop personal style consult with the lucky winner.
Scarlet is a fashion savvy, self-taught jewelry maker with a knack for personal styling. She started out at a young age making jewelry, which has evolved into an amazing line that has made appearances in fashion shows, New York catwalks and even on celebrities. It is apparent in her designs that she has a keen sense of style.
Scarlet’s personal styling business has also had great success turning men and women into fashionistas by incorporating current styles into customers’ existing wardrobes. Some of her most popular services include closet overhauls, style and shopping sessions, online shopping guides, as well as seasonal updates and special occasion consultations. Scarlet works with her clients based on their lifestyle and budget to help them define their own signature style.
1. How would you describe your personal fashion?
I buy like the French, dress like an artist, and rock it like Rhianna. This means that I strategically buy quality items that will last, make creative combinations with the small wardrobe of clothes I keep, and rock the crazy accessory or bold new color of the season. I take care of my things so I can wear them for years to come. My closet and jewelry case are full of treasures which makes getting dressed a blast!
2. What is your go-to piece of clothing and why?
This season it's the Prairie Underground Girdle Leggings. They have the perfect amount of stretch and I love the edgy details. I pair them with my colorful oversized sweaters and ankle boots.
3. Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I stay up on fashion and accessory trends by reading industry reports, flipping through mags, and researching online... but I have to say that my fashionable friends are the most inspiring. Designers, boutique owners and savvy thrifters who are on the hunt to create and wear interesting quality items in new ways.
4. What’s the one item everyone should have in their closet why?
Invest in a tailored blazer that fits you perfectly. In Portland, yoga pants and galoshes get by for daywear. As cute as the combo may be on some women, most want something more but are too busy to figure it out. Ladies want to look attractive, feel confident, and be comfortable. That's where I come in. We strategize and create looks that flatter your body complimenting the personal style within. Almost every single gal could use a smart tailored blazer to easily transform her casual looks. They come in a range of fabrics, colors, and silhouettes now so you can find one that suits you and your wardrobe. A tailored fit layered over a drape-y t-shirt, dark denim, and your favorite heels is effortlessly sexy.
5. What is your favorite fashion trend at the moment and why?
Pattern mixing and bold color blocking, I love it! These trends combat the grey winter! It works to mix Oregon's own Pendleton plaids with a trendy pair of patterned wool tights or colorful silks with a tweed pencil skirt.
6. How do you know which trends are worth investing each season?
I say invest in the basics that are classic to you and splurge occasionally on a trendier piece. We can create fashion forward looks with items we already own if we've collected things thoughtfully over the years. Not every trend is worth your time if it doesn't work for your body type or personal style. Experiment with accessories, they don't break the bank and can be worked in to multiple looks!
Q&A with GemKitty Designer Arwa Jumkawala
Today our guest blog features a local Portland designer with an unique approach to designing jewelry. Founded by Arwa Jumkawala in 2009, GemKitty allows customers to digitally design their own natural gemstone jewelry and bring a design idea effortlessly to life.
A lifelong jewelry designer, Arwa has always been moved by the infectious delight that giving and receiving shiny things can evoke. She brings a spare and playful aesthetic to her work, one in which the natural beauty of the gemstones and materials speaks for itself.
As time went on, Arwa's desire to share this joy more fully led her to teach numerous friends and colleagues how to create that truly unique and "purr-fect" piece.
1. How would you describe your personal fashion?
I prefer to update classics with a dash of fun. I especially adore black as base. It's a great canvas for colorful jewelry (I mostly wear my own designs). I also like to mix dressy and casual. For example, a tuxedo blazer with a whimsical t-shirt or sneakers with a LBD.
Sometimes, however, comforts trumps fashion; I've been known to wander out for a lazy Sunday brunch in my comfy garden-gnome-print pajama pants
2. Who are your biggest style influencers and why?
I love following celebrity fashion especially as covered by snarky blogs such as Go Fug Yourself! I'm fond of Olivia Palermo and Blake Lively's style, but my outfits are more influenced by my fellow Portlanders and stylish friends.
My favorite designers: Kate Spade, Thakoon, Elie Saab, Victoria Beckham, and Kara Ross, but almost entirely from afar... I'm a bargain huntress.
3. What is your go-to piece of clothing and why?
I'm addicted to black cardigans and own about 20 different ones. I can't seem to stop buying them; it befuddles my husband.
4. Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I peruse UrbanWeeds, What I Wore, and Shopping's My Cardio for ideas on new ways to layer or remix items in my closet.
5. What’s the one item you’ll splurge on and why?
A sturdy tote. I'm in the market for a new one. Any suggestions?
6. How would you describe Portland Fashion?
Whatever goes! Which unfortunately seems to sometimes get us in trouble. See: Exhibit A.
Q&A with Ms. Wood Designer Alicia Wood
You have been sleeping under a rock if you live in Portland and haven't heard of Alicia Wood! The fashion designer behind the Ms. Wood line was named Portland Fashion Week's Emerging Designer last fall and a nice little feature about her appeared in Portland Monthly shortly after.
Alicia is a wife and mother first, Designer second (and gardener 3rd). A Seattle native who was inspired to sew after making a pair of shorts in middle school home-ec class.
As a Portland fashion boutique, that just happens to carry Ms. Wood's unique and stylish jewelry pieces, we had to find out what inspires her style and sense of fashion.
1. How would you describe your personal fashion?
I like to keep my personal style simple and comfortable and try to focus on what fits my body type then doll it up with statement pieces such as bold jewelry, funky handbags and/or shoes. You know, like Ms. Wood!
2. Who are your biggest style influences and why?
I think my biggest style influence was my mom. She ALWAYS looked fabulous from head to toe no matter what she was doing. I always loved watching her getting ready to go out, she put a lot of effort into it but she never looked over done, just her beautiful self.
What is your go-to piece of clothing and why?
My go-to piece/s of clothing are Jeans (surprise!!!). You can just dress em' up or down too easily!
3. Where do you turn for fashion inspiration?
I seriously find fashion inspiration anywhere aaall the time. I can't turn it off.
4. What’s the one item you’ll splurge on and why?
I can't splurge that often but when I do it's shoes. They can make or break an outfit. So, I like to try and "make" my outfits that way.
5. How would you describe Portland Fashion?
Comfortable, functional, & unique.
